Sir John Assheton, son and heir of John Assheton of Ashton-under-Lyne by his wife Margaret, daughter of Robert del Leigh of Adlington, Cheshire; married, first, Joan, daughter of William Radcliffe of Smithhills, Lancaster; and married as his second wife, a daughter of Robert Staveley, of Staveley, Cheshire. Sir John was knight by 1377. The History of Parliament gives this Sir John's son, also Sir John, as the son of his first wife, Joan Radcliffe.

"Sir John, the only son (of Sir John and Margaret Legh), married the daughter and heiress of Stanley. He was drowned at Norham. He had issue two sons, Sir John and Sir Nicholas, the latter was on of the Knights of the Military Order of St. John, of Jersusalem, or the Knights of Rhodes. Sir John, the elder, succeeded his father."
