Gerard, of whom the Gerards and other families descended, is sometimes called Gerard de Windsor or Gerard Fitz Walter. He was the son of Walter de Windsor. His wife was named Nefta, the daughter of Rees, son of Theodor the Great, Prince of South Wales. They had three sons, William, Maurice and David.

William, son and heir.
David became the Bishop of St. Davids in 1148 and died in 1176. Maurice Fitz Gerald, the second son, was one of the adventurers with Richard Strongbow, Earl of Pembroke in his conquest of Ireland in 1170. He and Robert Fitz Stephen landed two years before and took Weishford, the first colony of English settled in Ireland. Maurice became the ancestor to serval noble families which flourished in that kindom, particularly the Earls of Kildare.

Gerard had a grant from King Henry I of Moleford in Berkshire, and because he served against the Welsh, was made the Norman Constable of Pembroke Castle. He strengthened this fortress and successfully defrended it. He killed the Welsh Lord of Chieftain of Cardiganshire, and was then appointed the President of the county of Pembroke. He was rewarded with the grant of many lands in Wales. He settled in Wales, and like his father, married a native, Nesta, daughter of the Prince of South Wales. Nesta had been the mistress of King Henry.
