• Background Information. 779
Harold, according to Dugdale, is the son of Ralph, Earl of Hereford. He possessed at the general survey, numerous lordships in England. Among these were Sudley and Todington in Gloucester, with the castle Ewyas, and other lands in Herefordshire, secured most likely because of his marriage to Maud, daughter of Hugh Lupus, Earl of Chester. Harold had two sons, John, his heir who assumed the surname from Sudley, the chief seat which he inherited; and Robert, who had the Castle of Ewyas, and therefore assumed the surname Ewyas.
