• Background Information. 608
John Phinney
(also spelled Finney) was in Plymouth, Massachusetts as early as 1630 with his mother, his brother Robert and his sister Catherine. Tradition has it that his father died while crossing the sea. John Phinney's mother, who is referred to only as "mother Phinney," died in Plymouth, 22 Apr 1650, "aged upwards of 80 years."

John Phinney probably lived in Plymouth for several years. His two sons by his first wife, Christina, were born there. This was John, born 24 Dec 1638 and Thomas, born 1648. He next moved to Barnstable, Massachusetts, where the seven sons by his 3rd wife were born. He eventually ended up in Britsol, Rhode Island.

~Finney-Phinney families in America, p. 1

His eldest son, John Jr., settled in Barnstable and found what is known as the Barnstable branch of the family. John Jr.'s descendants have usually spelled their surname as Phinney instead of Finney, which other branches of the family used.
