The earliest ancestor of William Penn, the found of Pennsylvania, is a man named John Penne of Minety who is the first of the Penn name to show up in the records of Minety. He paid a tax of 6s 8d on his chattels in 1522. On the Subsidy Roll of 3 Edward VI, he is assessed 6s on his movable goods worth 6 pounds. His name disappears from this series of rolls and his son William is now listed in his place. William's name is omited on the Subsidy Roll 35-37 Elizabeth I which matches the death of William Penn of Minety. This date is 12 Mar 1591/2.
