88:27 - Gilbert [Fitz Roger] Fitz Reinfrid, Lord of Kendal, in right of his wife, Gilbert was Steward to Henry II, in France 1189-89, and later to Richard I. He was Justice of the King's Court in 1185, and sheriffs of Lancashire, 1205-1216, and Yorkshire in 1209-1212. His father, Roger Fitz Reinfrid, was witness to the King's will, was a judge in 1176-1198, Sheriff of Sussex 1176, and in Berkshire 1186-1187. 160

Gilbert was a man of great wealth and importance in his day. He was the son of Roger Fitz Reinfrid, justicier and sheriff of Sussex and Berkshire, and Rohaise, his wife, niece of the powerful Ranulph, Earl of chester, and great-great-niece of the Conqueror. Gilbert married the only daughter and heir, Helwise, of William of Lancaster II, Baron of Kendal. Gilbert came into the possessions of William of Lancaster through his marriage to Helwise. Richard I added to Gilbert's holding soon after he became King of England. he added the whole forest of Westmoreland, Kendal and furness, to hold to him and his heirs. On the death of his father-in-law in 1184, Gilbert succeeded him in the Barony of Kendal.
