On 1285, on his father's death, William sued as William the son of Walther de Stanley his neighbors the brother Robert, Stephen and John de Bagenhold, and other for insulting and iltreating himself near Leak, claiming damages of £40. These brothers had been recorded as being involved in numerous robberies.

In 1287, William and his wife Joan borrowed money from Robert de Whitmore, a merchant in Chester, and this loan was still being repaid in 1324. During this generation a grant of twenty marks every year was given because of deforestation which meant the end of forestship. This began in 34 Edward I (1306/07). His children were John, who married Emma, Adam and possibly an unnamed daughter*.

Sir William de Stanley, knight, feudal Lord of Stanley, and in right of his wife, Johanna, eldest daughter and co-heiress of Phillip de Bannvile, Lord of Storeton. He was forester of the forest of Wirral, which office he held in 1317.

William de Stanley was the son and heir of Walter de Stanley. In 1292/93, he sued the Prior of Trentham for land and wood in Over Elkeston, Staffordshire, of which he claimed that the Prior had unjustly disseised master John de Stanley, his uncle, whose heir he was. In the same year, John along with his wife, brought proceeding for breach of agreement whereby he had conceded a wood to William de Bagenhold in return for a mill.

William de Stanley married, 27 Sep 1282, Joan, eldest daughter and coheir of Phillip de Baumvile at the church of Astbury, Cheshire, at a banquet given by his Uncle, Master John de Stanley, rector of Astbury.
