(Nicolás de la Cruz Cháves was born in 1770 in Los Cháves, Nuevo Méjico, Nueva Espańa 438 and was christened on 3 May 1770 in San Augustín de la Isleta, Isleta, Nueva Méjico, Nueva Espańa 438.)

Juan Nicolás de la Cruz Cháves and Juana de los Reyes Baca, Isleta, 12 Oct 1792-18 Jan 1793, AHAD-96, f. 702-703, 711-715.
Juan Nicolás de la Cruz Cháves, espańol, was the legitimate son of Fernando de Cháves and Antonia Sánches, citizens of Nuestra Seńora de Guadalupe de los Cháves. Juana de los Reyes Baca, 18, was an espańola, and the legitimate daughter of the late José Baca and Juana María Chaves, citizens of the puesto de Santonio de Sausal. All parties lived in the jurisdiction of San Agustín de la Isleta. Juan Nicolás stated that there was an impediment of exactly how, he and Juana de los Reyes were related. He added that Juana was an orphan because of her father's death, and that most people in the area in which he lived were relatives.
Witness: Pedro Padilla, 57, citizen of Sausal explained the relationship (third cousins) as follows:

The proceedings were forwarded to Durango for review and included with them were the certifications of baptism for the Couple. On 3 May 1770, Father Bernal, the minister at San Agustín de la Isleta, baptized Juan Nicolás de la Cruz, the legitimate son of Fernando Durán y Cháves and Antonia Sánches. His padrinos were Juan Durán y Cháves and María Magdalena Varela. The certification was taken from the book of baptisms at Isleta.

A second certification related to Sandía indicated that fray José Medrano baptized Juana de los Reyes in Nov 1774. Toribio García Jurado, Pedro Padilla, and Bernardo Mirabal gave sworn states that they had attended the baptism. Father Bernal recieved this testimony at Isleta on 12 Dec 1792.

In Durango, on 18 Jan 1793, Bishop Tristán granted a dispensation and ordered a corporal penances of 9 pesos 3 reales to be applied to works on the sanctuary of Nuestra Seńora de Guadalupe on the outskirts of Durango, but that would be commuted if they personally worked for a period of two and half months making materials for poor churches in the bishopic.
