Rev. John Eliot, the pastor of the church in Roxbury recorded the following in his church records:
"John Cheny he came into the Land in the yeare 1635, he brought 4 children, Mary, Martha, John, Daniel. Sarah his 5th child was borne in the last month of the same year 1635, cold February. he removed from o'church to Newbery the end of the next suer 1636. Martha Cheny the wife of John Cheny."
The land that was alloted to him were large. On 19 Jun 1638, he had 3 acres of meadow at the westerly end of the great swamp behind the grat hill; 25 Aug, six acres of salt marsh, a parcel of marsh with little islands of upland in it, about 20 acres in all, "Little River northwest; formerly part of the calf common,' was assignd to him 5 Jul 1639. Lot No. 50 in the "New Towne," "on the ffeld street" was granted to him 10 Jan 1643.
The town records of Newbury show that he was a member of the Grand Jury, 27 Apr 1648. He was admitted freeman, 17 May 1637. He was a selectman in 1661 & 1664.
John died 28 Jul 1666. John's will was cated 5 Apr 1666, was proved 25 Sep 1666, and the inventory of his estate was dated 22 Auf 1666,
