• Background Information. 632 William Payne, the son of Edmund and the grandson of Sir Thomas Payne, moves to Suffolk County, and took up his resident at Hengrave. He brought with him the use of his grandfather's Coat of Arms, which is known as the "Coat and Crest of Leicester & Suffolk County," and is also know as belonging to "Payne of Hengrave."
William Payne was a man of much note and importance in his day, being in the service of Edward Stafford, Duke of Buckingham, as bailiff of his Manor in Hengrave. In 1521, the Duke of Buckingham was convicted of conspiring against King Henry VIII, and was put to death. The office of the Duke was vacant due to the death of Edward Stafford, therefore, William Payne lost his position and was obliged to retire to private life. The next Duke appointed William Payne's son, Henry, to the office that William had once held.
William married Margery daughter of Thomas Ash, and they had twelve known children: Henry, who never married John who married, and his widow married William James Thomas George Nicholas, m.
