• Background Information. 632 William Paine, son of Anthony, was baptized at St. Mary's Church, 2 Dec 1565. He lived in Nowton, a Parish of St. Edmunds Bury, one of the shires and principal towns of Suffolk Country, St. Mary's Church being of of the Churches of Nowton. The public records, which were collected by the author of the Visitation of Suffolk, show that "William Paine, sometime Lord of the Manor (Nowton) was buried 21 Nov 1648," and that his wife was buried 29 Apr 1648. That would make him age eighty-three at the time of his death.
William Paine purchased the Manor of Nowton, the Paine family's ancestral home, from his nephew, Anthony. This made William "Lord of the Manor," between 6 Oct 1609 until he sold the manor to Sir Daniel de Ligne in 1621.
For proof of the Paine lineage, Albert Paine, author of Paine Genealogy, Ipswich Branch, points to the continued use of the same Coat of Arms originally used by the Paine family at Bosworth, followed by the Paine family in Suffolk County, and then by the original America families for two generations after emigration.
The children of William Paine were: • Anne • William Paine, b. 1598/99 • Robert, b. 1601 • Elizabeth, who married William Hammond • Dorthy, who married Simon Eyre • Phebe, who married John Page All of these children with the exception of Anne, came to the British American colonies. ~Paine Genealogy, Ipswich Branch, pgs. 41, 50 - 55
