Sir John Tempest, Knight, of Braceweell, ect, and Bealraper was born circa 140, and knighted by 1422. He held the offices of High Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1439 and 1458, and of Lincolnshire, 1456. He appealed in 1455 against serving for Lincolnshire, and in 1462, was presented to the mediety of the rectory of Claypole as his mother's heir. He shelted King Henry VI at Bracewell Hall. His will dated dated 29 Nov 1463 and proved at York on 8 Feb 1463/64.

Sir John Tempest, knight, of Bracewell, who served as the sheriff for Yorkshire in the 18 & 37 Henry VI, and of Lincolnshire in 34 Henry VI. Sir John, who was zealously devoted to the house of Lancaster, afforded a place of concealment at one period to its royal chief, King Henry VI, at Bracewell. Sir John married Alice, the daughter of Sir Robert Sherburn, of Stonyhurst, in Lancashire. There children were:
