"Pursuant to comand from his Excellency bearing date April 15th 1704 for the Seeteling of Garrisons in ye Towne of Lancaster & ordering men to ye Same. Wee the subscribers do hereby Direct and Comand you ye Inhabitants of sd: Lancaster to Repaire to you Severall Garrisons according to appointments as followeth & Attend your Duties therein. Dat. 20th April 1704."

Jacob Houghton is listed in a garrison commaned by his father-in-law, Josiah "Whetcomb senior" as well his with David, Hezekaish and Josiah Jr. Whitcomb, Henry Houghton and John Wilder Jr.

In a letter to "her Majesties Honrable Justices of County of Middlesex Covened in Quarter Sessions at Charlstowne," dated "March ye 9th 1710/1, Jacob Houhgton was one of the three Selectmen signing a letter asking for the a Schoolmaster for their town since it was dangerous to send their children far from their homes.

On Monday "ye 2nd, of march" 1718/9, the inhabitants of Lancaster "meet at ye meeting House, according to appointment in order to Choose Town officers &c.: Among the officers chosen were John Keys, Joseph Wilder & Jacob Houghton as Assessors "for ye year ensuing."

Joacob Houghton, son of John, son of another John Houghton, was born in Lancaster 17th day of the second month of 1674 [Lancaster records], and died 12 Jul 1750, in his 77th year [Bolton records]. He married Rebecca Whitcomb, who died 22 Oct 1742 at the age of 80 years, 10 months, 29 days [gravestone at Lancaster], daughter of Josiah and Rebecca (Waters) Whitcomb. He was the first town clerk of Bolton and the administrator of his father's estate.
