Sir John Cockayne of Ashbourne, son and heir of Sir John Cockayne and Letitia his wife, was M.P. for the ocunty of Derby several times. He married Cecilia, relict of Robert Ireton, of Ireton, co. Derby, and died in 1372.

William Cockeyn, of Ashburne, in 1299, by Sarah, his wife, had issue, John living in Ashburne, 1305, father of John Cockayne, who by Letitia his wife, was father of another John Cockney, a person of great distinction, temp. Edw III. The last named John Cockayne married Cecilia Vernon, of co. of Derby, and had two sons. Edmund and Sir John of Bury Hartley of Bedford, ancestor of the family of Cockayne, of Cockayne-Hatley.
