José Vásquez de Lara's maternal ancestry is the only lineage from New México that now can be traced back as far as the early 1400's in Spain. He was a native of the Villa de Laros (Santa María de los Lagos) in Nueva Galicia, Nueva España, and the son of Miguel Vásquez de Lara and Juana de Alcalá. He married María Magdelena Baca.
