The town of Milford was granted and settled in 1639. The first inhabitants removed from new Haven. The church of Milford was gather, as appeareth from the church records, 22 Aug 1639. The number of males was seven.

The first pastor was Reverand Peter Prudden: ordained April 1640, and died in 1656.

12 Feb 1639, Wopowage, afterwards Milford, is purchased of Indians by Peter Prudden and others. these paid for the premises "six coats, ten blankets, one kettle, twelve hatchets, twelve hoes, two dozen knives, a dozen of small glasses."

6 July 1656, Peter Prudden, the first minister of Milford, dies there in his 56th year. He was born at Edgton, Yorkshire and arrived at Boston 26 Jul 1637. He married Joanna Boys, and was brother-in-law to Reverand John Reyner. He leaves six daughters and two sons, of whom John became a minister in Newark, New Jersy. His course had been dutiful, and its termination is blessed.


Peter married Johanna Boyse, daughter of John Boyse Reverend and Joanna Stowe, in 1639 in Edgton, Yorkshire, England.72 (Johanna Boyse was born about 1616 in Halifax, Yorkshire, England and died on 8 Nov 1681 in Stamford, Fairfield, Conneticut.)
