Pedro Varela came to New Mexico with the Oñate Party of 1598. He was described as having a good stature and a red beard.

Pedro Varela passed muster in 1598, along with his brother Alonso. Pedro was six years younger, twent-four years of age, and gave the same father and birthplace as Alonso. He had a good stature and a red beard. Nothing more is known about him, save that his son Pedro Varela II, active in the major campaign in 1638, was referred to as a cousin of Alonso Varela.

These two brothers were the started the families know as Varela Jaramillo (Alonso), and Varela de Losada (Pedro).

He was among the Loyalists who stayed in New Mexico.


Pedro married Señorita de Losada.
