• Background Information. 1091
Idwal "Foel" ("the Bald") ab Anarawd, son of Anarawd ap Rhodri Mawr, king of Gwynedd between 916-942, paid homage to the West Saxon King, Edward the Elder in 918 along with Hywell Dda and Hywel's brother Clydog. Idwal had close relations with the West Saxon court during the reign of Ćthelstan, and visited this king many times between 928 and 937. Later these relations soured and Idwal died fighting Wessex in 924. His sons Iago and Ieuaf were expelled from Gwynedd when it was annexed by Hywel Dad.
