Gruffydd ap Madog, a.k.a. Gruffydd Maelor I, was the son of Madog ap Maredudd and his wife Susanna, daughter of Gruffudd ap Cynan, as well as the founder of the principal ruling family of northern Powys during the 13th Century. When his father died, he recieved Maelor and Ial (Bromfield and Yale). He later added Nanheudwy as well as the lands of Cynllaith and lover Monchnant upon the death of his brother, Owain Fychan. His eldest son was Madog, from whom these lands were known as "Powys Fadog." His wife was Angharad, daughter of Owain Gwynedd, and besides Madog, his other son wasn named Owain.

Gruffudd Maelawr succeeded his father, Madog ab Maredudd, as Prince of Powys Fadog in 1159. His chief residence appears to have been the Castle of Dinas Brân in Nanheudwy. Gruffudd was of great wisdom and experience, excelling among all the princes and nobility of his time in prudence and generosity. He died in 1190 and his body was carried from the Castell Dinas Brân to Meivod with great ceremony and was buried there in the church of St. Tysilio.

Prince Gruffudd Maelawr married Angharad, daughter of Owain Gwynedd, King of North Wales, by his second wife, Christina, daughter of Gornowy ab Owain ab Edwyn, Prince of Tegeingl. Gruffudd and Angharad had four sons and three daughters:
Madog, his succesor
Maredudd, who had two sons, Gruffydd and Maredudd Fychan, both of whom died 7 Dec 1269, and were buried in the church of the Cistercian Monastery.
Roderig, who married Beatrix, daughter of David le Clerc, Baron of Malpas.
Owain, who died in 1197
Christina, who married Meurig ab Rotpert ab Hywel
