William Mowbray, son of Nele Mowbray, witnessed a charter in Germany, 20 Nov 1193, by richard I at Spiers. He may have been with Richard on his return from Palestine or have been waiting in Germany for him. He was one of the pledges in Germany for King Richard's ransom.

William did not obtain possession of his father's estates until 1194 when he paid £100 to the crown. When King Richard died, Apr 1199, he fortified his castles, and swore fealty to John on receiving an underttaking that each should receive his rights. He had examption from the first sctage of King John.

William de Stuteville, the great-grandson and heir of Rogert de Stuteville who had been dispossessed after Tinchebrai, renewed his claim for him family to certain Mowbray lands. This was settled by a compromise giving each claimant 12 librates of land and the service of 9 knights.

William was in service of the King in 1201 and 1203 abroad. He witnessed a Royal Charter at York. Because he sided with King John against the French, the King of France confiscated their French lands, including Montbrai. He also was in service of the King in his expedition to Ireland in 1210.

Willaim was one of the twenty-five Barons appointed to enforce the provisions of the Magna Carta. He had sided with the Barons in their quarrel with King John, and as he continued to oppose King John, his lands were forfeited. He was among the Barons who were excommunicated by the Pope. He fought against the young King Henry at the battle of Lincoln, 20 May 1217, and was taken prisoner. By October of that year he returned his allegiance to the Crown and his lands were restored to him. He married a woman by the name of Avice, whose parentage is not known, and William de Mowbray died before Mar 1223/4 at Axholme.
