Sir John Boteler was born on 2 Mar 1402, and was only thirteen at the time he seceded his father to the family estates after his father's death at Harfleur, France. He and his estates were placed under the warship of Sire Peter de Dutton, Sir Gilbert de Haydock, John Gerard esquire and William Gernet esquire. In 1429, following the feudal tradition, he formally proved that he was full of age, and sued out of livery of his Lancashire lands. When he was nine years old, his father arranged that he would marry Isabel, the daughter of Sir William Haryngton and dame Margaret Nevil of Hornby. They were married in 1411.

John Boteler was one of the king's commissioner to make a treaty with the duke of Brittany for a truce or possibly a peace. [Rymer's Fædera, vol. ix. p. 544] He was again a commissioner, this time of musters, in 1418 [Rymer's Fædera, vol. ix. p. 544], and again in 1419 the king appointed him to make a treaty of peace with France. [Rymer's Fædera, vol. ix. p. 813]

Sir John Boteler lived only a short life. He died 12 Sep 1430 at the young age of 28. Children of Sir John and Lady Isabel were:
John, who was born after his three sisters, later succeeded his father to the family estates.
Elizabeth, married to Hamon Mascy of Rixton in 14 Edward IV and had two daughters, one who married Robert Worsley of Boothes and the other to John Holcroft of Holcroft.
Alice, married Sir Nicholas Byron of Clayton, and had four daughters
Ellen, married to William son and heir of John Mainwaring, 21 Jan 1444
