Although the patronymic of his son García indicates his father's name but there is no proof that this Sancho was related to the previous Dukes of Gascony. A clue to the career of the father of Count García is provided by the undated charter under which "dominus Willelmus Sancii comes Gasconiorum" donated property to the abbey of Saint-Vincent-de-Lucq referring to "quomodo venisset de Hispania avus domni Willelmi ubi se contulerat pater eius tempore domni Ludovici imperatoris."

The "avus domni Willelmi" was Count Garcia Sanchez, so the latter's own father would have been the elusive Sancho. This document also suggests that Sancho and his son were not related to the previous Dukes of Gascony.

Monlezun records that "Sanche Mitarra" from Spain was chosen as Duke of Gascony after the death of Duke Arnaud and that "tous les historiens…font descendre du grand Eudes Duke of Aquitaine"; mais comment et à quel titre?" In a later passage, Monlezun records that he was the third son of "Garsias-Ximenes" king of Pamplona, and that he eventually succeeded as king of Navarre after 901. This passage is confused and it is clearly not possible for Sancho to have been the same person as Sancho I García King of Navarre.

Sancho married (Señorita) de Aragon, daughter of Galindo I Aznárez Conde de Aragón, Fallou & Ribagorza and Unknown.
