Lieut. Jospeph Judson, came to the colonies with his father William Judson of Yorkshire, England, where Joseph was born in 1619. He died 8 Oct 1690 at seventy years of age, and was buried in the old Congregational cemetery. In his will of 27 Feb 1679, he speaks of himself as "now of Woodbury." He married Sarah Porter daughter of John Porter of Windsor on 24 Oct 1644. He was among the foremost men in the work of the town, and he held many offices for about thirty years. He was also, for many years, an officer in the militia, first as Ensign in 1665, and bering appointed Lieutenant of the Train Band in Stratford in June, 1672, and also engaged in the Narragansett War of 1676.

In 1661, he purchased a large tract of land from the Indians, at a place called Mohegan Hills, lying between the two branches of the Farmill River, containing more than 5,000 acres. In May, 1673, a pretion was presented to the townsmen of Stratford to the Gereral Court, to confirm the bounds of their plantation and "for adjudication of the claim of Lieut. Joseph Judson to a large tract of land alleged to be within Stratford bounds."

Joseph was one of the leaders in Mr. Walker's party and one of the subscribers to the "Fundamental Articles agreed upon in order to ye settlement of a Plantation at Pomparague." There is no evidence that he moved to Woodbury in 1672, but he was there in 1679 when he made his will.

"Lieutant Joseph Judson, Senior, another subscriber to the Fundamental Articles was a man of note before the removal of this town. He came from Concord, Massachusetts. He was deputy to the Genral Court for some six years, and otherwise distinguished. After the settlement of Woodbury, he was sent as a deputy with John Minor to the session of 1684, being the first time the town had been represented, and continued to represent the town for four sessions afterward. He was one of the leaders of Reverand Mr. Walker's party at Stratford. he had a first class "accommodation," but is not certain that he lived here till the close of his life, as a part of his land afterward sold to pay a ministerial rate. His son John, another "original signer," was a prominent individual in the town and Colony. He died 12th Jan, 1709/10, aged sixty-three years."
