Gilbert de Clifton, who during part of the reigns of Henry III and Edward I, executed the office of Seneschal to Henry de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln. He served the office of sheriff of Lancashire in the years 1278, 1286, 1287, 1289 and died 17 Edward II, A.D. 1323, possessed of the manors of Clifton and Estby, lands in More Hamlet, Skales, Filde Plumpton, Magna Filde, Plumpton Parva, and Gosenargh [Inq. P.M.]. The children of Gilbert de Clifton were William, his successor, Thomas, Henry, and John.
