Helias Giffard was the son of Osborne Gyffarde who came with William the Conquerer. Helias Giffard, who, in conjunction with his wife Ala, was granted in about 1100, part of his woods, with three borderers, to Abbey of St. Peter, at Gloucester. He left two sons, Helias, his heir, and Gilbert, ancestor of the Giffords of Chillington.

This Hellias Giffard son of Osberne Gifford was dead in 1130 when his on "Elyas" paid 100 marks for his inheritance of his father's estates. [Pipe Roll, 31 Henry I] He married Ala, and was named in 1090 in the Chartulary of St. Peter of Gloucester, and, with his wife Ala and his son Helias, appears in records again in 1121 of the same Chartulary. Besides Hellias, he had another unnamed son who ws the father of Richard Gifford, the Justiciary, living in 1175, and was the father of Gilbert, Mabilia and Matilda Gifford.
