• Background Information. 688
William married, in 1140, the widow of Geoffry de Favarre, and gave ten marks of gold that he might have the use of her lands and the custody of her son until he might be knighted and that afterward he might hold the land of said son, William. There son was named Adam de Hocton.

~The Houghton Genealogy, p. 21

• Background Information. 827
A Richard de Hoghton is found attesting charters about 1230 [Whallcy Coucher, iii, 835, 836]. Adam de Hoghton occurs in 1242 and later [Lancs. Inq. and Extents, i, 151, 158, &c]. A little earlier Adam son of Adam de Hoghton made a grant of his moiety of Heaton in Lonsdale [ibid. i, 30], the date being known by the appearance of Simon de Thornton, sheriff (1234-41), among the witnesses. Perhaps therefore the former Adam was succeeded by a son Richard and he by a brother Adam.

~A History of the County of Lancaster Volume VI, pp. 36-47

• Background Information. 167
In the reign of William Rufus, the manor of Hoghton was given to Warren Russell with a daughter in marriage by Hamo Pincerna. After his death, his wife gave it to her second son, Richard. His son, Adam, styled himself Adam de Hoghton. From him descended this Richard de Hoghton who married Sybell de Lea. He died in 1340, leaving a son, Sir Adam de Hoghton, knight of the shire for Lancaster.
