• Background Information. 141
Sir Robert de Ros of Wark on Tweed, Northumberland, younger son of Robert de Ros of Helmsley (died circa 1226), was probably the Robert, son of Robert de Ros, who, in February 1206/07, was a hostage in custody of the Earl of Oxford. In April 1230 he was going overseas in the King's expedition into France. In 1234 he was appointed a justice of the Bench, and went on circuit in Lincs, Yorks and Northumberland. He was appointed the chief justice of the Forests North of Trent, Nov 1236. He was in attendance of the King at York, when Alexander II of Scotland disclaimed Northumberland, Cumberland and Westmorland, in consideration of a money payment and a grant of lands in England, 25 Sep I237. He was summoned before the Council in London, Jun 1242. In May 1244 he was summoned against the Scots. After the marriage of King Alexander III to Princess Margaret, 26 Dec 1251, Robert de Ros and John de Balliol were sent with her to Scotland as guardians. In 1255 Margaret complained of their proceedings. Robert was summoned to England, his lands were seized, and a fine of 100,000 marks imposed.

Robert de Ros married, (? 2ndly), Christine, daughter of . . . Bertram, and sister and in her issue coheir of Roger Bertram. He was presumably living at Michaelmas 1269, and died probably before November following. His widow married Robert de Penbury and their son Ellis was her heir.
