Nominoë defeated the Frankish king Charles "le Chauve" King of the West Franks at Redon on 22 Nov 845, and established the independent duchy (for a time kingdom) of Brittany in 845. He was Brittany's national hero, Nominoe, revolted against French rule, taking control of both Rennes and Nantes before 851.
