Ralph (Randle) Mainwaring of Carincham
- Born: Abt 1470, Carincham, Cheshire, England
- Marriage: Margaret Savage 713
- Died: 1473-1474, Kermingham, Chester, England about age 3 713
General Notes:
Ormerod's text on the Mainwarings of Carincham is very confusing. Ormerod calls this Mainwaring, the progenitor of the Mainwarings of Carincham, Ralph in one sentence and Randle in the other. The County Families of Lancashire and Cheshire (p. 374), call him Ralph as does Boyer's Medieval England Ancestors of Robert Abell (p. 168) 713 ,721
The Magna Charta Sureties, 1215, Weis, 98:10A, the entry for Margaret Savage named Randle Mainwaring as her second husband, and calls him the third son of Randle of Over Peover, but notes that this lacks proof. 526
Ormerod's pedigree of the Mainwarings of Carincham shows Margaret Savage, daughter of Sir John Save of Clifton and widow of John Maxfeld, as the wife of Ralphe Maynwarynge of kermincham, third son of Randle Maynwarnge of Over Peover, and purchaser of Kerincham. ~George Ormerod's The History of County Palatine and City of Chester, Vol. III, pp. 78 713

• Background Information. 713 Randle or Ralphe Mainwaring was the third son of Randle Mainwaring of Over Peover, and Margery Venables. By charter dated 10 Henry VI, John de Kyngesley gave the manor of Kermycham, after the death of Richard de Swetenham (who had held part of the moiety of Kermycham with Kyngesley) to Randle Mainwaring, junior, his son. His son was a minor at the time, so Randle (Ralph) held the manor for his son. He died befroe 13 Edward IV.
This Randle (or Ralph) was married to Margaret, daughter of Sir John Savage of Clifton and the widow of John Maxfeld. Their children were: • Randle Mainwaring of Caricham, died 3 Henry VII, married Margaret, daughter of Hugh Davenport of Henbury. • Roger Mainwaring, excheator of Cheshire, 10 Henry 7, died 5 Henry VII, and married Margaret, daughter of Thomas Brooke of Leighton. • Robert Mainwaring, of Slepe in Shropshire • Hugh Mainwaring of Nantwich • William Mainwaring of Nantwich, married a duaghter of Will titley of Titley and ws the ancestor of the Mainwarings of Natwich • Margery Manwaring, married Thomas Davenport, son and heir of Hugh Davenport of Henbury.

Perhaps its a question of following the land.
Carincham was held from the Crown by the de Swetenham family by the service of 1 knight's fee from at least the beginning of the reign of Edward I.
After the death of a Richard de Swetenham in 10 Henry VI this fee was granted to Randle Mainwaring junior.
Now Ormerod says that John Macclesfield after the death of his wife Margaret Savage married secondly Elen (who was probably daughter of Matthew de Swetenham)and that John Macclesfield died issueless before 12HVI.
In other parts Ormerod says that Randle Mainwaring married Margaret Savage (dau. of Sir John Savage ( however this John Savage was never apparently knighted!))the widow of John Macclesfield.
William Beamont in his book "The Ancient Town of Frodsham in Cheshire" Published in Warrington by Percival Pearse in 1881 says " 3.John Savage of Clifton, esquire. From 1432 to 1445 he was bailiff of the King's forest at Macclesfield. He married Eleanor daughter of Sir William Brereton and died 29th June 1463. As well as a son he had two daughters 1st Margery wife of Edmund Legh of Baguley and secondly Thomas Leycester of Tabley, and 2nd Margaret wife of John Macclesfield secondly Randle Mainwaring of Carincham and thirdly Randle Mainwaring of Peover."
No sources quoted for any of this contradictory information. However, is it possible that Randle married John Macclesfield's widow but that this was Elen de Swetenham rather than Margaret Savage? How did the Mainwarings really obtain their interests in Carincham?
Ralph married Margaret Savage, daughter of Sir John Savage of Stainesby and Elena de Brereton.713
