Guillaume was the son of Theoderic (I) Comte d'Autun & his wife Aldana. The Vita S. Willelmi records that "beatus Willelmus" was born during the reign of King Pepin to "consule Theoderico …mater …comitissa …Aldana" [Ex Vita S. Willelmi, RHGF V, p. 470]. He was the Comte de Toulouse & Marquis de Septimania. The Vita Hludowici Imperatoris records that "Willelmus primus, signifier Hadhemarus" fought the Saracens in Córdoba (in 801) [Vita Hludowici Imperatoris 13, MGH SS II, p. 612]. His first wife was named Cunigundis and they six children.
