Sir William de Plumpton succeeded to the family property before Monday next after the feast of St. martin in Winter, 14 Apr, 15 Edward II (1322). Sir William married Alice, the daughter and heiress of Sir Henry Byaufiz, sometime before 14 Apr 1322, at which date the manor of Nesfield was given to him and his wife by his father Sir Robert. Sir Henry Byaufiz died in 1325, whereupon the manor of Brakenthwaite, together with the lands in Plumpton, Follyfoot, Braham, Kirby and Little Ribston, which he held by the courtesy of England, of the inheritance of his wife Cecilia, daughter of another William de Plumpton (descended from Robert, son of Huckman, seneschal of the manor of Plumpton,) was settled by fine, levied in Hilary term, 19 Edward II (1325/1326), upon Sir William de Plumpton and Alice his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, remainder to Thomas son of Peter de Midleton, and the heirs of his body, remainder to Marmaduke de Plumpton and the heirs of his body, remainder to Adam son of Peter de Midleton, and his heirs forever.

Sir William de Plumpton had a second wife, Christina, widow of Richard de Emildon, mayor of Newcastle in the reigns of Edward I through Edward III, the year he died. She remarried to Sir William before 18 May 1338, being the Monday next before the feast of the Ascension of our Lord, for a settlement was then made of the manor of Grassington in Craven to hold to Sir William de Plumpton and Christina his wife, and the heirs of Sir William, by Henry de Spofford, Champlain, as feoffee in trust.

Sir William was the founder of a chantry, at the altar of the Holy trinity, behind the high altar of the collegiate church of Ripon. The act of endowment is dated at Ripon, on Wednesday, the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, 20 Edward III (1345) and was sealed with the seals of Henry de Plumpton, the chaplain first appointed thereto, and of Sir William de Plumpton. Sir William de Plumpton died 36 Edward III (1362) close to the end of the year, as appears y account of the feodary of the honor of Pontefract of that date, wherein is set down xxv. as the relief of Robert de Plumpton, knight, for the fourth part of one knight's fee in Idell, after the decease of William de Plumpton, knight, his father.
