• Background Information. 632 Anthony Payne, son of William, married Martha Castell, who died 28 Jun 1603. He lived at Bury St. Edmunds, gentleman, and had the Manor of Nowton, settled up by his brother Henry. He died, and was buried at Nowton, 3 Mar 1606. He left a will dated 16 Feb 1606, in which he directed that his body was to buried in the chancel of Nowton church, near his late wife. He gave his house to his son William, also his nest of "bolls with cover all gilt having the arms of the Countess of Oxford upon it, . . ." He gave his wife's wedding righing to Mary, daughter of Walter Paine. All the rest of his estate was to be given to his son William, whom he appointed sole executor.
