Simón Corbet

  • Born: Shropshire, England
  • Marriage: Unknown
  • Died: Pontesbury, Shropshire, England

bullet  General Notes:

It isn't clear which of Roger Fitz Corbet's sons followed and was the father of the next generation, Simon Corbet. In Eyton's Antiquities of Shropshire, Vol. VII [pp. 10-13], Eyton claims that William, son of Roger Fitz Corbet, died without issue, and he was followed by his younger brothers Ebrard and finally Simon. He proposes that Simon was the father of both Roger Corbet (II) who died about 1165, and the next Simon Corbet, father of Robert Corbet, of Caus living in 1176-1219. Robert Corbet, son of Simon, succeeded his Uncle, Roger Corbet.

Robert

In Boyer's Medieval English Ancestors of Certain Americans, William [p. 62], the son of Roger Fitz Corbet, is given as the father of Simon Corbet, rather than William's brother Simon as Eyton proposing.

Whether the third generation was William or Simon, both agree that the fourth, and following generation is Simon Corbet followed by Robert Corbet, 4th Baron of Caus.

There are other pedigrees that completely leave out a generation(s) between William and Sir Robert, so the names of the generations between William, son of Roger Fitz Corbet and Sir Robert Corbet, Lord of Caus is unsure. One such referrence is The English Baronets, A Genealogical and Historical Acount of their Families by Thomas Wotton, p. 74, says "William Corbet, of Watlesboroug, had two sons, 1. Thomas, of Watlesborough, and 2 Robert Corbet, of Caus Castle, from whom the Corbets of Hope, Sir Richard Corbet, of Longner, Salop, Bart. and the Corbets, or Leigh, are descended."

Barons of the Welsh Frontier: The Corbut, Pantulf, and Fitz Warin Families, 1066-1272 shows Simon Corbet of Pontesbury as the son of William and the father of Robert Corbet, husband of Emma Pantuff, p. 5

The Family of Corbet; Its Life and Times, pedigree chart of Corbet of Chaddesley-Corbet, Hope and Leigh-Juxta-Caus, Leighton and Subsequently of Sundorne has Simon Corbet of Pontesbury as the top of the chart, followed by Robert, 4th Baron of Caus, ob. 1222 married to Emma Pantolph. 721,733,1098,1490

• Background Information. 1098
The heir of Roger Corbet of Caus was his nephew, Robert son of Roger's brother Simon Corbet.

"On 24 Jan 1190, King Richard I, being at Westminister, expediated a Charter to Robert Cobert relating to the Stiperstones Forest, of which it would seem that Corbet had be deprived. By this charter the king restored and confirmed to Robert Corbet the whole Forest of Tenefrestanes with its appurtenances, to hold to the same Robert and his heirs, as that which pertained to the Honour of his Barony. Wherefore the the said Robert and his heirs were to have and to hold the aforesaid Forest, well, and peaceably, and honourably, as Roger, the paternal uncle (patruus) of the said Robert, had held it in the time of King Henry, the Grantor's father." [Eyton Antiquities, 7:11]

A suit over the manor of Pontesbury in Shropshire, 1236, shows that Robert was the son of Simon Corbet. In that year, Thomas Corbet, son of Robert Corbet, insisted that Pontesbury was his by hereditary right, because Simon Corbet, the grandfather of Thomas ("Simon Corbet avus ipius Thome") had sesin of this manor in the reign of Henry II.
