• Background Information. 141
The first member of the family of whom there is documentary evidence is this Robert's son, also named Robert. He was called "Robert son of Robert," and he held a knight's fee of William de Percy in Legsby and elsewhere in Linconlnshire in 1166. the name Thweng shows that there was a connection with Thwing in East Riding Yorkshire. Although there are no surviving records to show this, it is believed that Robert de Thweng, the son of Robert, held half a knight's fee of Adam de Brus in 1166. It has also been suggested that the family originated in Durham and were related to the FitzMarmadukes, lords of Horden.
