• Background Information.
According to K. S. B. Keats-Rohan [Domesday People, p. 401; Domesday Descendants, p. 321], the first Roger de Berkeley, the Norman grantee, had a wife named Rissa. Their children were Roger de Berkeley who died before 1130 and was married to Rachendis; Eustace de Berkeley; and an unknown son who was the father of William de Berkeley. Willaim de Berkeley had a son named Roger whose daughter, Alice, married Maurice de Berkeley, the son of Robert Fitz Harding, a native whose family was in England before the Norman conquest. Robert Fitz Harding was given Berkeley Castle when the earlier Norman Berkeley family lost it.
