Robert de Welles, son and heir of William, farmed the Honor of Haughley, Suffolk, alias the Honor of the Constable, 1184-1188. He is mentioned often in the Pipe Rolls at the end of the 12th Century as surety for the debts of Simon, earl of Northampton. He was also, himself in debt to the "Jews" and assumed the burden of his father's debt to the Crown. He made grants to Greenfield Priory, to Bardney Abbey and to William Ruffus called his kinsman. He is also mentioned in lawsuits, 1202/03. He married a woman named Maud, and he died before Michealmass 1206. His widow, Maud, survived him.
