Leonisio José Senteno, a native of Queretaro, was the son of José Mateo Senteno and Ygnacia Rosalía Dávila. He had been reared by Fray Manuel Vivero in New Spain since the age of eleven, and had come to Albuquerque two years prior to 1761, when he married Antonia Varela.
