He names his father and paternal grandfather in a charter of confirmation to Saint-Victor-en-Caux. In 1144 he initiated the reconquest of the Marches conquered by the Welsh after the death of King Henry I, capturing Rhys ap Howel in 1145, killing Meredith ap Madog in 1146, and blinding the former in 1148.
