• Background Information. 1407
Emma de Percy was the natural daughter of William de Percy and an unknown woman. It was recorded in 1212 that William de Percy gave 1½ Carucates which he held in chief of Kirmond le Mire (wap. Wraggoe, co. Lincoln) to William Malebisse with his daughter in frank-marriage and that William's heirs were holding them. The gift constituted a moiety of 3 carucates held there by the first William de Percy in 1086 and by Alan de Percy in 1115-18. In 1175 the land and service of William Malebisse was assigned to the share of the earl of Warwick in the division of the Percy barony. William Malebisse, who was of Acaster Malbis and son of Hugh Malebisse, died in 1176. Richard Malebisse his son was described by Maud countess of Warwick and her sister Agnes de Percy as their nephew. John Malebisse, son of Richard son of William, referred to Emma de Percy, his grandmother in a charter to St. Mary's York [Guisborough Chartulary, ii, 61n].

• Background Information. 141
Emma, with whom her father William de Percy, gave land in Kirmond le Mire, Lincolnshire, in frank-marriage to William Malebise [Book of Fees, p. 171]; it is stated that at the date of the return, 1212, the land was held by the heirs of William Malebise, and since the gift was in frank-marriage, their heirs must have been direct descendants. Emma's christian name is supplied by a note to Guisborough Chartulary, vol. ii, pp. 60-61. Their son Richard Malebise was named as her nepos by Agnes de Percy, coheir of William de Percy [Sallay Chartulary, no. 406], and also by her sister Maud, countess of Warwick. [Fountains Chartulary, p. 817]
