• Background Information. 885
Manasser Biset was a steward of Henry II [Delise, Rec. des Actes de Henri II, Indroduction, p. 403]. He was with Henry II before his accession to the throne. He witnessed the charters at Château-du-Loir and Falaise, Sep 1151-Jan 1153. [Delise, Rec. des Actes de Henri II, i. pp. 38, 40] He came to England along with Herny II, and was a frequent witness of his acts until his death in 1176/77. As early as Michalmas 1156, he held lands in Hants [Pipe Roll 2 Henry II. p. 54]. The last time he appears on the Roll of Henry II is 176/77 and in his place, is his son, then a minor. In 1166, he held one kinght's fee of the old feoffment of the honor of Giffard in England [Red Bk. Exch. p. 312], which suggest a connection with the Pays of Caux. Manasser Biset married Alice de Cany, sister and heir of Gilbert de Falaise, lord of Carny. Their son and heir was Henry Biset.

Essentially this is recording that William carpentarius has granted to God and the canons of the chirch of St Peter of Thurg' with the consent of his heirs Henry Biseth his son and Manasser Biset his brother and Ernulph Biset his "nepos" the mill of Clyva for ever for the health of his soul, of his heirs and of all his relatives and for the souls of his father William Biset and his mother Hawise and his wife Susan and for the soul of his brother Henry Biset and Ausoldus Biset his brother and Henry his "nepos" and all his predecessors. It adds at the end that he is to be buried in that church wherever he dies in England.

I think normally the names following "pro anima" would be assumed to be dead, but I believe there's the odd example where this has not been the case (or has been argued not to be the case).
