John de Cobbeham was the eldest son of Henry de Cobbeham, and succeeded to his father's manor on his death. In 20 Henry III (1235/6), he was constable of Rochester Castle [Cat. Rot. Pat. 18]. From 26 (1241/2) to 32 (1247/8) Hen III, he held the office of sheriff of Kent with Bertram de Criol. He was raised to the bench about 28 Hen III, fines being levied before him from Easter in that year, 1244, until Michaelmas 1250 [Dugdale's Orig. 43] during which time also writs of assize were frequently directed to him.

John de Cobbeham was married twice. His first wife was a daughter of Warine Fitz-Benedict, by whom he had two sons, John and Henry. His second wife, Joane, daughter of Hugh de Nevill, produced a son, Reginald, from whom the Cobhams of Sterborough Caste, in Surrey, sprung.
