In the time of Henry II, Chewton was the land of Geffrey Martel, a person of eminence, being chief butler to the King, and of an ancinet family chiefly seated in Dorsetshire from the time of the Conquest. To which Geffery succeed Ivo, William and Roger Martel, whose daughter and coheir brought it in marriage to Reginald, younger son of Reginald Fitz-Peter, who died seized ot it 14 Edward I having held it of the King in chief by the service of half a knight's fee.
