The family of Oxenbridge derived their name from Acken, Oken, or Oxene-bridge. John Oxenebrigge was a juror on an inquisition relating to the Echinghams taken 6 Jul 1329. The residence of this John, the first of the family in Sussex, was Atte Gate in Beckley, on the river Tillinghaml In 1341, John was one of the jurors on the Nonæ Inquisition; and on 5 Jan 1363, Geoffry, by a deed dated at Beckley, to which John Oxendridge was witness, released his right in the pasture in Beckley call Elysebregge to John Maynard.

The earliest known Oxenbrigge of Beckley was John de Oxenbrigge. From him descended three brothers, Thomas, Walter and Geoffrey. From Thomas, the elder, sprung two important branches, those of William and Robert Oxenbridge.
