Charles Cawley's Medieval Lands,
Ramiro de León
, son of Ordoño II King of León & his first wife Elvira Menéndez. He succeeded his brother in 931 as Ramiro II King of León. He defeated the troops of Abd al-Rahman III Caliph of Córdoba at Osma in 933. However, the Caliph counter-attacked and, following the humiliating peace imposed on the kingdom of Navarre in 934, and the sack of Burgos in Castile, defeated King Ramiro and forced him to agree a position of neutrality while the Muslims besieged Zaragoza in 935. However, King Ramiro succeeded in defeating the caliph's troops at Alhandega/al-Khandaq, near Simancas in 939, allied with Fernán González Conde de Castilla and Queen Toda regent of Navarre. The victory increased the prestige of King Ramiro who was able to increase the territory of León into the valley of Tormes, repopulating Salamanca and Ledesma with Christian settlers, and agree a peace treaty with the caliph. Although Muslim forces made considerable advances in Galicia from 947, King Ramiro was again victorious at Talavera in 950.

His first wife whom he married about 925 and divorced in 930 was his first cousin, Adosinda Gutiérrez, daughter of conde Gutierre Osórez & his wife Aldonza Menéndez.

His second wife was Urraca Sánchez de Navarra, daughter of Sancho I García King of Navarre & his second wife Toda Aznárez de Larraún.

De Wikipedia en español Ramiro II de León, called the Great, was a king of León between 931 and 951. He was the son of Ordoño II. After the death of his father & after helping his brother Alfonso to reach the throne by deposing his cousin Alfonso Froilaz, son of his uncle Fruela II, he took control of northern Portugal (926), at Added by Galicia when his brother Sancho died in 929.

Ramiro, as his first wife, married his cousin Adosinda Gutiérrez, daughter of Count Gutierre Osorio and Aldonza Menéndez, daughter in turn of Count Hermenegildo Gutiérrez and sister of Elvira Menéndez, King Ramiro's mother. Ramiro and Adosinda were parents of:

• Bermudo, died in his childhood, shortly before January 941
Ordoño, who succeeded him on the throne as Ordoño III de León.
• Teresa Ramírez, the second wife of King García Sánchez I of Pamplona.

Ramiro repudiated Adosinda, probably due to the imposition of canon law, the king contracted a second marriage between 933 and 934 to Urraca Sánchez, daughter of Sancho Garcés and Toda Aznar who had two other documented children:

Sancho, who succeeded his brother Ordoño III
• Elvira Ramírez, who at an early age became a nun in the monastery of San Salvador in Palat del Rey.

Ramiro married Adosinda Gutiérrez, daughter of Gutierre Osóriz Conde de Galicia and Ildonza Menéndez, about 925. (Adosinda Gutiérrez was born in Galicia, Iberia and died after 941 in León, Asturias, Iberia 490.)

Ramiro next married Uracca Sánchez de Navarra, daughter of Sancho I García Rey de Pamplona and Toda Aznárez de Larron. (Uracca Sánchez de Navarra died on 23 Jun 956 and was buried in Catadral de Oviedo.)
