Mendo Gonçalves was the Duke of Galicia and the a Count of Portugal. He was a dominant person in the Kingdom of León being the armiger regis, or royal alférez, the king's armour-bearer and commander of the royal armies under Vermundo II. He alsowas the tutor and later father-in-law of King Alfonso V.
