• Background Information. 715 The Visitation of Lancashire by William Flower, 1567, show John Devyas, of Yorkshire married to the daughter and one of the heires of Wir William Samlesbury of Samlesbury, Lancashire, Knight. They are shown having a son named Nicholas Devyas who has a daughter, the sole heir who marries Gilbert Sowthworthe of Southworthe. • Background Information. 823 Nicholas, the son or grandson of Sir John d'Ewyas and Cecily de Samlesbury, died without male issue, leaving a daughter married to Sir Gilbert de Southworh, and her portion of the manor continued in this family until the year 1677, when John Sourthworth, Esq. sold it and the Hall to Thomas Braddyll, Esq. for little more than £2000.
