After the death of his half brother, Pepin, Charles the Bald succeeded to the throne of France in 840. He married Hermentrude, daughter of Eudes (Odo), the count of Orleans.
They had a daughter named Judith, who married Æthelwulf, king of Wessex, and then later eloped with Baldwin I.
