Donnchad's parentage is confirmed by the Annals of Ulster which record the death of "Donnchad son of Crínán, king of Scotland" in 1040 [Annals of Ulster, 1040.5, p. 480]. He is not named as king in the 12th century Cronica Regum Scottorum king-list [Skene (1867), XVI, Chronicle of the Scots 1165, Cronica Regum Scottorum, p. 131].
