He was the leader of one of the four major contingents that comprised the forces of the First Crusade in August 1096. He was arrived with his forces in December 1096 in Constantinople.


Hugh married Adélaide Comtesse de Vermandois, daughter of Herbert IV Comte de Vermandois and Adele de Vexin. (Adélaide Comtesse de Vermandois was born about 1062 in Vermondois, Normandy, France and died on 23 Sep 1120 in Bruges, France.)
