José Maríano de la Peña was born in Mexico City, the son of Juan Antonio de la Peña and María Antonia Álvarez. On 10 Mar 1783, he married María Soledad Gutiérrez. In 1785 he declared that he had been brought to New Mexico, when eight years old, by a Don Baltasar (illegible). In 1789 he was executor of the will of Clemente Gutiérrez, his father-in-law. He was living at Pajarito in 1790, when he was described as a native of Mexico City, thirty-one years old, and a merchant by profession. His Gutiérrez wife was twenty-six. With them was a brother, twenty-one, also born in Mexico City. A census in 1802-3 named him, his wife, and four children: Maríana, Lorenzo, Rafael, and Bartolomé.
